Ethical Analysis

  • IoT devices constantly collect and transmit data, oftentimes with the user not knowing that said data is being collected. This means that the company that made the device could be selling your data to advertisers.
  • Of a similar vein, the connection the IoT device has to the central server could have dodgy security, meaning it can be hacked into by cybercriminals and data can be stolen that way.
  • In order to combat these problems, developers can ensure that they ask the user for consent before sending data to the central server, and ensure that the software used to communicate with the server is up-to-date with the latest security patches.

Societal and Economic Impact

  • Generally, the IoT is designed to be convenient; it should automate things that should be automated. This is a very broad use case that affects many fields. For this reason, McKinsey Global Institute estimates that IoT could contribute between $3.9 trillion to $11.1 trillion per year to the global economy by 2025. [4]
